Photographic manipulation - post production work.
Original image of Sophie.

I used auto tone on this image to make it a little darker which allowed certain features of the image stand out more.

On this image, I used auto contrast and tried to make the focus of the image on Sophie, rather than the bright grass background.

On the following images, I just played around with the Dodge and Burn tool and attempted to make the light areas and the dark areas much darker.

Again, on this image I just used auto tone to highlight main features of this image.

Induction project.
Evaluation

During my practice using the camera, I used manual focus and I had my first attempt at using the focus rings and zoom on the camera. I learned that the T-stance helped me to get a more accurate position and helped me to get a better photo which is what I was aiming for. As I was still learning how to use the camera properly, at first I did end up taking photos landscape rather than portrait which wouldn’t be the correct way for what I needed the image for, and this would be a problem as it wouldn’t work on the magazine front, however I corrected myself and ended up taking the photos correctly, in portrait mode. Whilst I was doing this though I soon learned that there is a huge difference between the portrait and landscape mode and that it was crucial for me to take the photograph correctly otherwise it wouldn’t work.
A few of the photographs I took weren’t in focus as I had never used that mode before however some were, and to improve this next time I think I would have to spend more time taking them and focusing it properly. I also learned that lighting in an image is extremely important for getting a good quality photo. I had to make sure that the back, side and front lighting were good for the specific image type look which I was going for. I was specifically aiming for good front lighting as I needed to use it for a magazine front cover. At the time I don’t think I did think completely about the background which caused the photos I took to look slightly unprofessional but I hope to soon be able to take good quality photos with an appropriate background to the topic it is relating to. The majority of photographs I took had a natural green background and I think this has caused me some issues as I needed the image for a magazine front cover, and the background doesn’t quite link into the context of my magazine.
I think to improve next time I will have to develop my people skills so that I am able to control my subjects better. By doing this it will allow me to get a better outcome on photographs and will improve my photography skills overall, although I don’t think this has affected the type of images which I have produced.
I already had experience using Photoshop from Art in school; however I used many new tools which I was not familiar with. I found new tools fairly hard to use since I was completely new to how they all worked but a few of the tools I was familiar with I found quite easy to use and was able to apply them to my work. I think my text was well controlled because I used sensible colours which stood out against the background and I tried not to use too many words so that it didn’t get over crowded and would seem quite ‘boring’ to the reader. I didn’t cut out any images or use a drop down shadow because I felt that I could use those skills in my next project and could use my basic knowledge now to improve on later in the unit. I used the main colours of mainly white and blue for the fonts because I thought that those colours would show up best against the bold background and wouldn’t contrast the attention from the image. Also, white is a simple yet bold colour so I thought it would work best with the short and snappy pieces of writing on the front cover.
I think to improve my front cover next time I will need to include more skills such as adding drop shades to the writing and cutting around the image, as I feel this will help me to improve my skills and achieve an overall better front cover. I feel that my main strengths for this specific front cover is the way which the font looks against the background: the white doesn’t detract attention from the main background image but doesn’t blend in either. Also I think that the font I used relates to what kind of magazine it is and I think it all works well together as a whole.
